Literature review The graduation and unemployment difficulties of adolescents with learning and behaviour disabilities

Introduction Among the significant percentage of people in the world suffering from various disabilities are adolescents in secondary schools, post-secondary institutions and colleges as well as those in employment. Two of the major disabilities affecting students are: learning disability and behaviour disability.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Literature review: The graduation and unemployment difficulties of adolescents with learning and behaviour disabilities specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Grenwelge, Zhang and Landmark (2010), defines leaning disability as inability of one of the primary or learning processes such as writing, spelling and reading is not functioning as effectively as it is supposed to. On the other hand, emotional or behavioural disability has been defined as a condition characterized by extreme emotional change leading to persistent behavioural change. These two conditions can adversely aff ect educational performance amongst the students, as well as career performance for the employed adolescents. A learning disability for example causes young children difficulty in achieving success in education, despite the fact that they can perform some tasks very effectively. This study explores the difficulties experienced by young adolescents with the two disabilities defined above, with the aim of coming up with effective strategies make the situation better for them. This literature review separately focuses on the two categorical difficulties faced by the young adolescents: negative outcome of graduation and negative outcome in employment (Al-Yagon, 2011). Graduation Negative Outcomes According to Hamzah, Subramaniam and Abdullah (2009), statistics indicate that in 2003 alone, there was a 10% high school dropout in the US, a larger portion of which was made up of students with disabilities. This is an indication that a large percentage of students with behavioural and learni ng disability do not get to graduate from high school. There are a number of factors that lead to this. One of the causes of high school dropout of this group of students is the feeling of being out of place (Kemp, 2006). Students with learning and behavioural disability give up easily on high school education because they may feel that no one is there for them to identify with them and care for them. Most of the time they could be secure knowing that there is an elderly person to help them in making decisions when they cannot make them on their own. For example, learning disability is believed to be as a result of the inability of the nervous system to coordinate properly.Advertising Looking for essay on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This causes a challenge in reception, processing and communication of basic information. This means that sometimes students suffering this disability cannot make important decisions that affect their future, thus they need someone to look up to during such moments. Secondly, students with such disabilities are prone to be involved in risky behavior. According to Mihandoost (2011), students having learning disability may choose to be involved in risky behaviour in order to substitute the thought of being â€Å"stupid† with being â€Å"bad†. The result of such behaviour is suspension from school or poor academic performance, eventually resulting in failure to graduate. Poor academic performance especially for students with learning disabilities may result from lack of consistence in their knowledge. For example, a learning disability student may read and comprehend a topic well, but fail to do an examination on the same topic because that student cannot write what he knows. The end result is that this student won’t be able to graduate because he couldn’t pass his examinations (Kemp, 2006). Just like other students, learning and behavio ural disability students undergo a lot of stress in life. Unlike other students, the students with these disabilities cannot withstand that much stress. This is why they reach a point where they disregard the value of post-secondary education in their future. The result of this is that they drop out and they don’t get to graduate (Sinclair, Christenson, Thurlow, 2005). Self-esteem is important in the academic performance of any student. There is a tendency of disabled students to lose their self-esteem when they face frustrations from themselves and from the surrounding people. This group of students will work so hard to achieve certain goals, but they are emotionally battered when they don’t achieve the goals. This leads to a rise in frustration and an eventual loss of interest in academics (Horowitz, 2009). Another factor that affects the graduation of students with disabilities is the lack of proper accommodation in schools. According to Reschly and Christenson (20 06), research has shown that colleges and universities are increasing the efforts to provide necessary facilities to accommodate students with disabilities. Despite these effort, statistics carried out by NCES indicated that 20% of students in colleges who admitted to be having learning disabilities claimed that they were not receiving proper accommodation in their studies. Research has sadly shown that these students are made to feel out of place by some institutions. These are institutions which view students with disabilities as a cause of distractions for other â€Å"normal† students, thus the institutions have no place for such students. To make the situation even worse, sometimes the society does not think that these young people have any need for education; hence they don’t bother to support them in education. This leads to dropout before they graduate (Sin, Francis, Cook, 2010).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Literature review: The grad uation and unemployment difficulties of adolescents with learning and behaviour disabilities specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Unemployment Negative Outcomes The challenges experienced by young adolescents with learning and behavioural disabilities do not stop at the learning level. Even those who manage to graduate despite the many hindrances still face difficulty in the job market as a result of their disability. The challenges experienced in institutions of learning have a direct impact on the performance of young disabled people in different careers. Most of these people enter the job market with insufficient skills attained at the post-secondary institutions. This puts them in a very stiff position where they cannot compete favourably with others in the job market. The outcome is that they end up missing the positions of employment (Groce, 2004). According to George and Kidd (2011), some companies become hesitant to hire disabled people due to social prejudice as well as lack of confidence in their ability. Therefore, they rarely employ these people. Another cause of unemployment among young people with learning and behavioural disabilities is limitation in skills. Due to lack of proper coordination, this group of people has a limited choice of career, leading to limited skills. This makes it very hard and takes them very long to find relevant employment in their training field (Nind, Flewitt, Payler, 2010). According to the research conducted by Lehr and Lange (2003), some of the employees with learning and behavioural disabilities admit that their disability hampers them from using the most recent, common and effective technologies in their organizations. These employees are at a risk of being laid off their job for others who can use such technologies. Others disabled employees simply quit their jobs because they cannot cope with the conditions in these places in terms of accommodation for the workers wi th such disabilities. More research needs to be conducted to explore ways in which such organizations can come up with proper accommodation for workers with disabilities (Mallett, Stoddard-Dare, Workman-Crewnshaw, 2011). The same research also shows that most of the young employees who have learning, behavioural and other disabilities choose to hide these disabilities from their employers and workmates. The major reason for making this choice is fear of stigmatization discrimination in the work place.Advertising Looking for essay on education? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The research also indicates that the employees choose to hide the disabilities because there is a possibility that the employers will monitor them more closely with the anticipation of a mistake in their work, which makes it hard for them to cope as well as to avoid being fired (Maehler, Schuchardt, 2011). Finally, the study of Repetto et al. (2010), indicates that most of the people with learning disability at the job market cope with the conditions depending on their past experiences in secondary and post-secondary institutions. These experiences include self-esteem level, treatment by others as well as the academic skills obtained. Conclusion It can be concluded that there are many challenges that young adolescents with learning and behavioural disabilities face, both in attaining graduation and in search of employment. In line with the National Council on Disability (2004), there is a need to increase effort to ensure that many students in this disability group not only graduat e, but also find comfortable employment. Further research is therefore necessary to explore ways in which these conditions can be improved. References Al-Yagon, M. (2011). The National Consortium on Deaf-Blindness observes that the cardinal characteristic of deaf-blindness is that the combination of losingss bounds entree to auditory and ocular information ( Deaf Blindness ) . Through this research I was able to detect the beginning of deaf sightlessness and research about this disablement. Laura Bridgaman was the first individual who was an single with deaf sightlessness who learned language ( Deaf Blind Education: History ) . Most of the clip when we say deaf blind the name that comes to our head is Helen Keller . She is the most known deaf blind individual in the history. A school for the deaf blind was non ever easy to construct. Keller had to go to the school individually for deaf and blind. She attended the Perkins Institute for the Blind and the Wright-Humanson school for the deaf in New York. and The Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Massachusetts. Deaf Blind schools were started to set up after the publish of Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in 1885. This school was a boarding school supported by the province ( Deaf Blind Education ) . However. merely a little per centum of kids who are deaf-blind are without any sight or hearing. Most of the kids have some type of vision and/or hearing that is utile ( Bekker ) . Everyone knows that there are five senses that are of import. Among these senses the 2 most of import senses are hearing and Vision. These two senses help us garner information. This besides helps us to analyze better. 80 % of what we learn is visually. That includes seeing the notes and watching an informational picture. Hearing is the footing of the communicating or linguistic communication system that most people use ( R. M. Turnbull. and M. L ) . In school we listen to our instructors to larn more information and to make better in academic. When these two major senses are impaired or lost. a individual will hold to fight in several countries and this will besides impact a child’s developments. A deaf blind pupil will hold troubles in communication/ linguistic communication development. motion or motor development. cognitive and emotional or societal development. organic structure image and ego construct. Rubella. the vaccinum can non be used all the clip to forestall deaf sightlessness ( Bekker ) . However. if a adult female takes this vaccinum prior to pregnancy being a deaf blind can be prevented. This vaccinum should non be used by a pregnant adult female. After taking this vaccinum the adult females who received should wait at least two months to pass before acquiring pregnant ( Bekker ) . All the kids with deaf sightlessness differ from each other. They are all alone in their ain manner. The sum of ocular and audile loss varies in all persons. The centripetal input sometimes gets damaged but for some other persons it won’t acquire damaged. The vision and hearing may be lost from birth but for some others it takes clip and finally gets lost. Either or both losingss may be gradual or immediate and may non be accompanied by the loss of other organic structure functions ( Mcllnnes and Treffry ) . Deaf blind people will confront symptoms that are combined. There will be symptoms based on loss of hearing and loss of vision. There are different types of conditions that may take to deaf sightlessness. Congenial Rubella Syndrome and Usher Syndrome are common conditions that lead an single to be a deaf blind. loss of a small vision and hearing is really common among older people. Early intercession service is established for immature kids who are 3 old ages old or under the age of 3. These services are important for kids with deaf and sightlessness and their households. They address the child’s developmental and demands of acquisition. Sometimes these services are free of charge. Children with deaf-blindness who are 4 old ages old or older should alter to the Particular Education Services from the Early Intervention Service. This service is provided free through the public school system. Even if a kid with deaf-blindness is non in school yet ( for illustration. a four-year-old ) . the school system is still responsible for doing certain that particular instruction and related services are available to the child ( Deaf Blindness ) . Deaf Blindness can be prevented by taking early safeguards. Peoples should be more cognizant of this disease. Children who are 12-18 month old can be prevented from deaf-blindness by taking the vaccinum called Rubella. A 3rd vaccinum known as Measles mumps-rubella ( MMR ) is given when the kid is 3 old ages old. These vaccinums are truly of import to give to the kids. This can forestall future loss of vision and hearing. Most of the people in our current society are non cognizant of deaf sightlessness ( Bekker ) . In our society kids with disablements are non treated the right manner. Most of the kids who have both ocular and audile disabilities are assumed to be deeply retarded. Parents of these kids face this state of affairs otherwise. Some parents struggle for their child because of the deficiency of aid. Parents who don’t have adequate money to handle their kid struggle the most. Some parents cope with the state of affairs but some others are unable to manage the state of affairs and they may be holding a bosom interruption. Parents should remain strong and seek professional support. They should give their kid proper attention. A parent’s feeling for their deaf blind kid is non interpretable through words ( Mcllnnes and Treffry ) . Through this research I was able to research about deaf sightlessness. a disablement which I had no information about. But now I know different types of information about deaf sightlessness. 85 % of people don’t cognize what deaf sightlessness is or how it causes. Therefore it is of import to raise a public consciousness about deaf sightlessness in our society.

Statistic homework Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Statistic homework - Case Study Example e year 2005, this report analyses the variables with the aim of understanding relationship between the indicators and financial success of the products. This section analyses the data and focus is first made to descriptive statistics using tabular and graphical approaches. Analysis of possible relationship between the indicators and total gross sales is then done. The table and the graph shows that most of products opening weekend gross sales (70 percent) earn below $ 10 million in opening weekend gross sales. Ninety five percent of the products earn below $ 40 million gross sale in the opening weekend and the higher values can be considered outliers. The descriptive statistics show that a majority of the products (73 percent) earns total gross revenue of less that $ 40 million. Ninety four percent earns below $ 120 million and higher earnings, can be considerd outliers because of the small percentage. Fifty percent of the products have less than 400 theater appearences while 29 percent have more than 2000 appearences. This suggest a sparce distribution of number of theaters, though with a majority having less number of theters (less than 400). The following table and graph of the number of times that a product stayed in the top 60 show that the highest percentage of the products (38 percent) appeared less than five times. Fifty-seven percent of the products appeared in the top sixty between five and 20 times and only five percent of the product appeared more 20 times or more. Opening gross sales, total gross sales, and number of weeks that a product takes in the top 60 have similar distribution and this suggests their possible association. Simple paired relationships are also evident between total gross sales and both opening weekend gross sales and number of weeks in the top 60, but not between total gross sales and number of theaters. Simple regression analysis confirms this and shows that opening weekend gross sales and number of times in the top 60 are

Is Marxs analysis of capitalism still valid today Essay

Is Marxs analysis of capitalism still valid today - Essay Example These among other economic predictions are some of the reasons that supplement Marx’s relevance in the present time. The ideology of the social structures and economic interests dictate the political movements and intellectual conceptions of the people. This fact is evident in many circumstances in the present day. The political parties nowadays are controlled by the association of certain members of the public with clear and similar goals. These parties with a particular member associations define the economic state of the nation considering the people they represent. Marx developed this theory in 1840 so as to explain the different systems of royalism that France had that were affecting the social structure. In Marx’s view, he claimed that the economic interests revolved around the social groups (Schumpeter 2013, p. 20). Politically, it is possible to rise to power through reaching out to these groups and changing the economic status of a nation will certainly affect these groups. In the last presidential elections of the united states of America the tea party which supported the candidate mitt Romney was formed as a result of being fed up from the taxes of the Obama administration. The tea party started as a social group that were of the opinion they were being taxed more than the usual and the fruits of their taxes were not being experienced. This led to an association of people who wanted to change their financial status, through the changing of the political setup to attain the economic interests of the members (Sperber 2013 ). This is an example of the current events that are applicable to the theories that Marx put out in assessing the leadership of a place relative to the economic status of the region. The labor theory of value is also a Marx ideology which tends to describe the pricing of a commodity in relation to the cost of labor induced in production. A commodity

Review of Blue Lagoon Essay Example for Free

Review of Blue Lagoon Essay The Blue Lagoon Explores the Garden of Eden The Blue Lagoon is often ridculed as a fluff piece of adolescent nudity. However I believe The Blue Lagoon raises interesting questions about human sexuality. How did we discover sex, and what about our sexuality is innate? The movie presents the case of an innocent boy and girl from the Victorian Age, shipwrecked on a beautiful tropical island. They are soon without any adult guidance whatsover. As children, the two are inseparable, but the movie presents a plausible change in their relationship as they start to go through the changes of puberty. They dont understand the physical changes that are happening to their bodies. And they start to become distant and secretive and angry with each other and they dont quite understand why. What they dont realize is that these changes are part of the process of moving apart and developing a separate sexual indentity from each other. Only after we see the steps of this transformation to sexual maturity completed do we see they are ready to discover humans oldest instinct in each other, which comes naturally to them in time. They then go on to discover the mysteries of parenthood and the psychological changes that come with that. Other themes such as religion and law are explored as well. What keeps this movie watchable is the beauty of the actors and the beauty of the island. The scenes on the lush tropical island and the bright blue ocean are beautifully shot and dreamlike. The natural beauty evokes a Garden of Eden. And this movie seems to try and explore the relationship that might have existed between Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, learning about love, sex, and children all on their own. And I think the movie gives it a pretty good shot. The Blue Lagoon is much deeper than people give it credit for.

Nick Carraway - Biased Narrator of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby :: Great Gatsby Essays

Nick Carraway - Biased Narrator of The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby, a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is a novel that tells the story of different peoples lives and how they are intertwined with each other. The story is told from the viewpoint of the character Nick Carraway. It is through his eyes and ears that the reader forms their opinions of the other characters. In the novel the characters trust Nick and confide in him quite a bit. He thinks of himself as an open minded non-judgemental, non-partial person. I think that it is almost impossible to live your life and not judge others and also not be partial and judge different individuals with different standards. Nick wants the readers to believe that the way he was raised gives him the right to pass judgement on a immoral world. He says, that as a consequence of the way he was raised he is "inclined to reserve all judgements" about other people (page 5). His saying this makes it seem like we can trust him to give a fair unbiased account of the story that he is telling, but we later learn that he does not reserve all judgements. Nick further makes us feel that he is a non-partisan narrator by the way he tells of his past. We come to see that Nick is very partial in his way of telling the story. This is shown when he admits early in the story that he does not judge Gatsby because Gatsby had a "extraordinary gift for hope, a romanric readiness". This made Nick more loyal to Gatsby than other characters in the book. Nick overlooks the wrongness of Gatsby's bootlegging, his known associations with speakeasies, and with the character Meyer Wolfsheim, a man rumored to have fixed the World Series in 1919. Yet he is disapproving of Jordan Baker for cheating ina golf game. He also says that he is prepared to forgive this sort of behavior in a woman, "It made no difference to me. Dishonesty in a woman is a thing you cannot blame too deeply, I was causualy sorry, and then I forgot" it seems like he can't accept her for being "incurably dishonest" and then he says that his one "cardinal virtue" is that he is "one of the few honest people" he has ever known.
