Environment and Economy of Kuwait :: Geography
Environment and Economy of Kuwait Kuwait is not self-sufficient in agriculture but the country will be in the future. Its production of cereals, vegetables and fruit grown in the oasis of Jahra and scattered smallholdings is not sufficient for the population's needs, due to limitations of water supply, fertile soil, climate and manpower. Much of its food needs to be imported but government investment and the work of the Kuwait Experimental farm have led to improvements whereby existing resources are more efficiently utilized. Kuwait is a small arid desert land of about 6200 square miles. There is virtually no natural source of fresh water. Climatic conditions entail occasional high winds and dust storms, little or no rainfall, and summer temperatures as high as 120Ã ¸F. "Consequently, arable land amounts to less than 9% of total acreage."1 Soil deficiencies and the intense heat and sunlight allow continued cultivation only by expensive underground pipe-fed irrigation or by hydroponics. Ordinary irrigation under these conditions results in gradually increasing soil salinity. this phenomenon has been the cause of the estimated 1% annual decrease in arable land for the region as a whole. Hence, development of traditional agriculture is severely restricted. Kuwaitis are under no illusion that self-sufficiency will take less than 20 to 30 years to attain and even then it cannot include such items as beef and cereals. For Kuwait cereal production is considered too expensive and unnecessary. Self-sufficiency in poultry, vegetables and fruit is a visible goal: already Kuwait produces 60% of the eggs it needs, 40% of the poultry meat and 100% of the tomatoes. The next emphasis is likely to be on dairy farming and animal husbandry to increase the 25% of the required milk supplies that is produced in the country. The Kuwaitis are very conscious of the fact that urban growth and the hunting of animals which used to live in the desert has meant the virtual extinction of wildlife. Kuwait is importing from many countries animals such as cows, chickens and sheep. In view of Kuwait's extremely unpromising natural environment which was made even worse after the Persian Gulf War, the key to all its hopes for self-sufficiency lies in research and experiments. Their experimental farm research farm:Omariya, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research and the Kuwait Fund for the Advancement of Sciences are engaged in a variety of projects concerned with the hybridization of plants, animal breeding, the increase of yields in desert conditions, the treatment of brackish water and effluent water, irrigation methods, etc.

Miracles of Life Essay
IÃâm standing on the pavement outside my house, a coffee mug warming my hand, my hair dishevelled and my bare feet cold. ItÃâs dawn. I love the way the purple of the sky stretches across to the fringes of the trees, seeping into the vivid orange of the sun. IÃâm remembering mornings like this when we stood out here together, a frayed, woollen blanket draped across our shoulders, coffee mugs in our hands, shivering from the cold and gazing awe-struck at the sun as its fiery head slowly rose out from between the trees. The cars on Springvale Rd would buzz past us, whipping wind into out faces. Sometimes we shared opinions on these cars Ãâ" each car contained a person, you told me, and each person had a story to tell. We agreed with wonderment how it was quite amazing, this choreography of life. The cars themselves were moving capsules containing stories. Maybe in that polished Honda, there would be a joyful father and mother, and a new-born cuddled in soft blankets. Or maybe, that sleek, black Holden would contain an ASIS agent, investigating a terrorist attack. You laughed at the latter example, saying that my imagination must have gone wild from reading too much Alex Rider. I protested that possibilities were open and everything was possible. Once, we sat on the street curb, and I told you that I wanted to go to somewhere as exciting as medieval Paris, so that I could hunt on horseback all day and flirt with the lovely ladies. Eyebrows raised, you retorted that I should shut my perverted mouth, before primly reminding me that the medieval French had never heard of McDonaldÃâs and often went for days without baths.
Quikr vs Olx Essay
Before you sit down to plan the future of your clubââ¬â¢s marketing activities, you need to take stock of where your club is now and why you are there. One useful way to get a clear picture of where your club currently sits is by using a SWOT analysis. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. By using the SWOT analysis you can identify where your club stands in the market, which provides a useful launch pad for making future marketing plans. Take the time to work through the SWOT process carefully and you will have a clearer idea of: The things your club does well, and the things you need to improve on (strengths and opportunities). â⬠¢ What types of competition exist for your club and which ones can be defended (strengths and threats) â⬠¢ Whether your club needs to change the product itself to protect from outside influences (weaknesses and threats) â⬠¢ Which issues your club needs to make as its priorities (weaknesses and opportunities). Stre ngths When you look at the strengths, concentrate on the club itself and whether it can achieve the outcomes you want. Examples of strengths include: â⬠¢ Strong financial base. â⬠¢ Strong local need for your product, many new members, etc. â⬠¢ Group of skilled volunteers. â⬠¢ Support from local businesses, politicians, etc. â⬠¢ Well-equipped clubhouse. â⬠¢ Committee is well-structured, enthusiastic, capable, etc. Weaknesses Weaknesses often appear as the direct opposite of the strengths listed above and include: â⬠¢ Weak financial base. â⬠¢ Diminishing need or desire for your product, fewer new members, etc. â⬠¢ Few volunteers. â⬠¢ No support from local businesses, politicians, etc. Out of date ill equipped clubhouse. â⬠¢ Committee is poorly structured, overworked, disinterested, etc. Opportunities Opportunities refer to the possibilities of new growth because of the changes in the external environment and can include such things as: â⬠¢ Promotion of sport by government authorities, e. g. renewed ââ¬ËPush Playâ⬠campaign. â⬠¢ New population of potential users moving into the area, e. g. with children. â⬠¢ Grants by local and national government to encourage sport and recreation. â⬠¢ Organisations looking to sponsor local activities. Seasonal interest in particular sports, e. g cricket in summer, football in winter. â⬠¢ International or national interests the activity your club is involved in, e. g Commonwealth or Olympic Games. â⬠¢ Promotion of your activity to a different age group or gender e. g. lawn bowls to teenagers, rugby to girls. Threats As with strengths and weaknesses, the threats are often very similar to the opportunities. Examples of threats include: â⬠¢ Traditional sponsors of sport and recreation changing the way they spend their sponsorship dollars. Seasonal interest in particular sports or activities which is in direct competition with your own, e. g. competing codes of Rugby. â⬠¢ Promotion of sport to different age groups or gender which competes with your clubââ¬â¢s interest e. g. ballet and soccer for girls. â⬠¢ Other interests including television, video games, school activities, part-time work for teenagers, and so on. â⬠¢ Time related issues for example, competition for volunteers time, longer working hours, both parents working ââ¬â children unable to attend, limited available free time for both children and parents. Other organisations with better facilit ies. â⬠¢ Lack of knowledge and interest in your product. A SWOT Analysis should be drawn up to look like this: |Internal |STRENGTHS |WEAKNESSES | |Factors |Vision : simple and quick |Not having international experience, therefore diversification | |(Things about |Strong funding |might be a problem at later stage. |your club) |Experienced partners: Norwest Venture Partners brings in a lot of |No acquisition till date as a result OLX has surpassed quikr. | | |experience |Employee base is very low: Need to increase the sales force and| | |Horizontal rather than vertical |target other opportunity to increase market share. | |Customer Centric, not just technology centric : Free missed call | | | |Investment in analytics, mobile platforms | | |External |OPPORTUNITIES |THREATS | |Factors |Internet penetration(10%) is bound to increase |Low entry barrier | |(Things |Internet surfing through mobiles has surpassed PC. Is Good spech
This can be seen in many areas, from the struggle for women's rights, to the oppressive e racism that caused the great Civil Right's Movement. Throughout these hard times, there have always been those who have stood up and fought for what they believed in.One of these great people woo old have to be Doctor Martin Luther King Jar. Despite the crippling racism, and the horrible treatment he faced as an African American, King stood tall and strong, leading the African Americans in the fight t gag insist racism. Time and time again he stood before crowds, protesting against the injustice they f aced. Before one of these large crowds, he gave one of the most memorable speeches in American whist ROR; his ââ¬Å"I Have a Dreamâ⬠speech. In his speech, he stressed how, despite all the hatred and injustice of the time, he still had a dream. His dream, across the nation, all would put aside the past and become united. His dream across the nation, men and women would not be judged by the co lor of their skin, b UT by the content of their character. His dream, despite the disdain and judgment of the time, in the futz ere across the nation everybody would be able to join hands and become brother and sister, united . His speech became an outstanding inspiration, and motivated the people to see each other as equal s, thus ending the Civil Rights Movement. King stood against injustice, and for the belief all are equals. However, in toad Yes society this still does not ring true. Does living on the street, living paycheck to paycheck, or begging for food and change seem equal to living in mansions, swimming in grand pools, and feasts Eng every day? Injustice Cushman 2 in today's society being no longer found in violence and insults, but found in if nuances. Entertainers earn far more than public servants, creating a huge inequality gap. Those who sacrifice so much, and devote themselves to doing the right thing, they struggle more than those who o focus inwards, and devote th emselves, to themselves.Statistically speaking, 23% of the homeless population is made up Of veterans, this being between 1 30,000 and 200,000 veterans without a home o n any given night. These men and women devoted their lives to America, to protecting every single India viaduct's freedom in this nation. What greater sacrifice can there be? Additionally, a recent example of annual military pay came in at $38,734. Compare this to a football athlete in the NFG who makes $1. 9 m lion annually. America is paying a man with a football jersey and helmet more than a man in a comb t helmet and uniform.America has promoted paying a man more to catch a ball, then a man who is putting his life on the line for his country. How immoral does this seem? Furthermore, the base of all if notion in society has to be education. Who gives education? Teachers do. Elementary teachers, who have given the foundation of success, earn an annual average of $56,130 nationally. Actors of the likes of R Bert Dow ney Jar. Girl Education Essay
Despite all tall claims by the government and nagging by voluntary organizations, a vast majority of the girls are yet illiterate in India. During the last four decades since independence, much is being done to emancipate women. Education of girls is one of the basic features of the plan. Many schools and colleges are founded for girls. Even co-education has received considerable support from the public, and although orthodox parents still view the system of co-education with suspicion, a large number of families send their daughters to co-educational institutions. Female education is, indeed, receiving a great impetus and the advance made by our country in this direction during the last decade or so is considerable. It is being increasingly recognized that educated wives and mothers are an asset to a nation and that neither expense nor effort should be spared to make female education popular and even compulsory. Being educated, they are working in banks, private firms, hospitals and government offices. Education has led to their economic independence and equality with menfolk. They have now an honoured position in society and have secured their rights from the reluctant men but all this is confined chiefly to the urban areas. In rural areas most of the people are still against girlsââ¬â¢ education. So much needs to be done yet. An intensive propaganda is necessary to popularize female education not only in the towns and cities where its value is already fully recognized but in villages where the education of girls is still in its infancy. There are many villages where school for girl does not exist. Every village must have a girlââ¬â¢ schools, or if that is not possible owing to lack of funds, parents should be persuaded to admit their daughters to boysââ¬â¢ schools thus promoting co-education. Furthermore, the extreme poverty of the Indian masses makes it imperative that education for girls should be free up to the matriculation standard. Ifà facilities for female education are provided in every village, it will also be possible to make it compulsory. Special legislation should then be enacted to deal with parents who neglect the education of their daughters. This compulsion would be essential in early stages because most villagers are still too ignorant to understand the value of education for girls. It should not be forgotten, however, that the education given to girls ought to be strictly in accordance with their needs. At present, practically no distinction exists between the education of boys and that of girls. The two sexes are taught the same subjects both at school and college and they have to appear in the same examinations. That is clearly absurd. We must not lose sight of the fact while boys have to be fitted for careers; girls have to be prepared primarily for their duties as wives and mothers. It is true that many girls would like to take up various jobs like the boys, but even so the syllabi and courses of studies and the subjects for the two sexes should not be exactly the same. Girls ought to receive a good general education. No matter what other subjects they are taught, cookery, music, painting and hygiene should receive special emphasis. Subjects like arithmetic, history, geography and science will no doubt be common to boys and girls. Girls should primarily be trained for domestic life and all that goes with it. For we cannot escape the natural fact that the girls have one day to become wives and as a consequence mothers. Due emphasis should be laid on nursing, cooking, laundry, houseà hold accounts, etc. in the education of girls. They should be given lessons in child psychology. Ample opportunities should exist for them to learn the arts of dancing, music and painting if they have the necessary aptitude. That being so, the natureà of education that is given to them now must be such as to prove useful to them in their future capacity as wives and mothers. No doubt certain girls show promise of growing into artists, writers, orators, politicians and so forth, others may prefer to follow such professions as doctoring, teaching and law and still others may like to become steno-typists, secretaries, business executives, receptionists, telephone operators, etc. But the majority of girls have naturally a distinct preference for a general education, after which they will enter matrimony and settle down in their homes. So while all possible arrangements should exist in schools and colleges to encourage talent or a special aptitude for a particular profession, the average girl should be so educated and trained as to enable her to make home life happy, healthy and civilized.

Panââ¬â¢s Labrynth â⬠Captainââ¬â¢s Task Essay
ââ¬Å"Leave us now, my honest guards. Go and nag the pathetic cook to make me something appetizing for my lunch. Now, back to you Mercedes, I have always thought you were someone I could trust, someone I could rely on.â⬠Mercedes cowered helplessly against the stony wall as the Captain slowly shadowed over her. His beady black eyes glared ferociously at her as he spoke, ââ¬Å"You and me, we had a special trust, what happened?â⬠His face filled with concern. He then turned around, with his back facing towards her, poured 2 generous glasses of alcohol in and put them on a tray. Mercedes took the hidden knife from her neatly pleated dress and cut the tight rope from her tiny hands. ââ¬Å"I grew up and realised what a ruthless, greedy pig you are.â⬠She replied bluntly. The Captainââ¬â¢s face flushed a bright red. His horrifically big eyes bulged out of their sockets as he struggled to keep his big hands off of Mercedesââ¬â¢ petite face. ââ¬Å"In all my life, I have never seen a women disrespect a man so acutely.â⬠Mercedes stared at his back for several minutes before springing into action. ââ¬Å"I have hated you ever since I met you. You make me sick. How could such a man treat his family like a group of cockroaches? Only a fool would act the way you do.â⬠ââ¬Å"Listen here you spiteful little rodent. I am a well respected man and if you want to live, my sweet, I suggest you start changing your atrocious attitude towards me.â⬠Swiftly, Mercedes rapidly ran and lunged towards the Captainââ¬â¢s back without a second thought. ââ¬Å"This is from your wife.â⬠She whispered. She stabbed him in the top right of his back. ââ¬Å"This is from Ofelia.â⬠She said with her voice raised slightly louder and stabbed hard at the bottom left of his back. ââ¬Å"And this is from me!â⬠She shouted from the top of her lungs. By now, she turned the Captain around and slit his mouth from the right side. His shirt was a bright scarlet shade, and his back and mouth leaked with fresh blood. The Captain was silent for a split second, as the blood glistened from his face, but then he replied, ââ¬Å"You can run, my sweet, but you canââ¬â¢t hide. I will get you, you stupid pathetic runt, if itââ¬â¢s the last thing I do.â⬠Mercedes, petrified, backed out of the old dusty barn and stumbled straight past the 2 guards from earlier. ââ¬Å"Hey, you!â⬠One of the guards shouted. Mercedes knew he was shouting for her, but her heart told her to keep running. As she ran tiredly up the hill, the Captain had caught up. ââ¬Å"GET HER YOU USELESS PARASITES!â⬠Within 2 minutes of the Captainââ¬â¢s screaming catastrophe, there were 20 men on horses charging up the hill for Mercedes. ââ¬Å"I will kill that Captain, even if I have to die trying.â⬠Mercedes whispered to herself. Mercedes ran and ran, faster and faster, as the hill got steeper and steeper. She came to an abrupt hold as the hill began to flatten. The Captain was right; there was no-where she could hide. ââ¬Å"Hello my pretty, what a surprise to see you up here?â⬠Cooed the first guard on a huge horse twice the size of her. He was also armed with several ferocious guns. ââ¬Å"If you come any closer, just watchâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Whispered Mercedes. She was shaking with fear. She had the knife in line with her delicate throat. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t do it, Bonita, youââ¬â¢ll regret itâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Murmured the first guard. ââ¬Å"Just let her kill herself, sheââ¬â¢s useless anywayâ⬠Advised the second guard. There were now 20 huge brawny horses circled around her. Mercedes could hear her head thumping intensely. Out of nowhere, all 20 of the guards were shot off their horses one by one. One minute the empty hill-top was surrounded with tough guards on great big horses, and the next minute, every single guard was shot down from their horses. Mercedes felt as shaky as a leaf. Then, out of the empty surroundings, her brother, Juan, and his army slowly wafted towards her. ââ¬Å"Oh Mercedes! I was so worried about you.â⬠Mercedes turned around and playfully hit her muscular brother. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t you ever scare me like that again! I was petrified. I never knew where you were, of where you were staying, how you were eating.â⬠ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t worry sisââ¬â¢, I had the whole thing planned out. We were going to attack the stupid Captain anyway, so we thought why not now, and just when my baby sisââ¬â¢ needed me too!â⬠Mercedesââ¬â¢ brother sniggered with laughter with the alongside rebels. Mercedes blushed a shade of rosy pink. Suddenly, one of the quieter ones from the group decided to speak up. ââ¬Å"Sir, when are we going to attack again?â⬠He piped Mercedes and her brother both looked at each other. ââ¬Å"Well, Son, we have just finished attacking, so we shall just wait and see.â⬠By now, Juan was sitting on the bare ground smoking a cigar, with his incredibly long legs up and resting on a huge rock. ââ¬Å"How many times have I told you to stop smoking!â⬠Screeched Mercedes. ââ¬Å"HEY! Iââ¬â¢m the one who just saved your life, give me a break! I do the hero thing for once, ad I still get told off!â⬠Juan took a long puff on the cigar, and the passed it onto another rebel. ââ¬Å"Look, I donââ¬â¢t want you getting hurt, so make sure you take care of yourself. I wonââ¬â¢t always be there to look after you, so remember that.â⬠Mercedes stood straight, smoothed her creased up dress and gave her brother a hug. ââ¬Å"I will go and finish my duty, and you go finish yours, ok?â⬠ââ¬Å"Si, si, mi hermana, I will succeed. Do not worry,â⬠Reassured Mercedesââ¬â¢ brother. Slowly, Mercedes walked off into the sunset, where a huge mission awaited her. She and her brother would just have to wait and see what would happen.

International Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words
International Business - Essay Example In short, international business is facing fewer constraints at present even though it faced plenty of barriers in the past. The mode of entry into overseas market by international companies is often attracted huge debates. Some companies are looking for alliances with a company in the target country whereas other companies are looking for merger and acquisition as a mode of entry strategy to expand their business to overseas countries. Even the same company opts for different mode of entries in different countries. For example, Wal-Mart established a business alliance with Bharti group in India as a mode of entry in India market. At the same time, they used mergers and acquisition as the mode of entry in European and South African markets. ââ¬Å"Cross border mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are a main vehicle for foreign direct Investment. Yet despite its quantitative importance, the determinants of cross-border M&As are still not well-understoodâ⬠(Brakman et al, 2008, p.1). G aughan (2007) explained M & A as a process in which two corporations combined together to form a single one. Moreover, only one corporation survives after the M & A while the merged corporation goes out of existence after the merger process (p.12). Merger and acquisition are one of the most popular business strategies in the modern business world. However, there are lots of concerns and debates about the success and failures of this business strategy. This is because of the fact that there are plenty of examples about the success and failure of the M & A deals in recent times. Some of the recent statistics show that the popularity of M&A as a mode of entry is decreasing in recent times. Some think the M&A cycle has already started to turn up. In the first three quarters of 2012, as the euro tottered and fear gripped the global economy, M&A activity worldwide was 17.4% lower than in the same period of 2011. Yet it surged in the fourth quarter, to the highest level of any quarter in t he past four years. This is one reason to expect more mergers this year, says a report by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, a law firm that specializes in M&A. However, Mr Moritz suspects that some deals in late 2012 were rushed through by companies that were worried about possible changes to the tax code. Most deals in 2013 will probably be fairly small, designed to strengthen or fill a gap in the buyerââ¬â¢s existing operations. These are known as ââ¬Å"plug and playâ⬠. Transformational megamergers grew rarer in 2012, with only four deals topping $20 billion. That was the same as in 2011, and fewer than in each of the three previous years (Mergers Shall we?, 2013). From the above statistics, it is evident that business pundits are not sure about the success and failures of M & As. To merge or not to merge, that is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the pains of negotiation & integration or to defy global trends and find alternatives. This paper critica lly evaluates the arguments of the pro-merger and anti-merger schools and takes a conclusive position that global mega-mergers are a good policy to undertake in international business practice. Arguments in favor of M & A Miller (2008) pointed out that Edwin L. Miller (Author) â⬠º Visit Amazon's Edwin L. Miller Page Find all the books, read about the author, and more.
