Life and Works of Rizal Essay Example for Free
Life and Works of Rizal EssayHe continued his stu dissects at the Universidad Central de Madrid, Spain, where he earned the degree of Licientiate in Medicine. He also attended the University of Paris in France and earned second doctorate at the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Having travelled the world extensively, Rizal became conversant in at least twenty-two languages. He was a prolific poet, essayist, diarist, correspondent, and novelist whose most famous works were his two novels, Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These works fearlessly exposed the injustices committed by the Spanish civil and clerical officials in the Philippines amd spurred the militancy of armed revolutionaries and reformist against more than 300 years of Spanish rule. Rizal was proponent of institutional reforms by peaceful nub rather than violence revolution. But he was associated with the growing insurgency movement and declared an enemy of the state by the Spanish authorities particularly b ecause of the subject of his novels. He was deported to Dapitan in Zamboanga then incarcerated at Fort Santiago. When the Katipunan exploded into the full-blown revolution, the authorities were quick to incriminate him. After a mock trial, Rizal was convicted and sentence to die by firing squad at Bagubayan on December 30, 1896. Eventually, his martyred death proved to be the catalyst that precipitated the Philippine revolution and the downfall of the Spanish colonial rule.

Rate of Reaction and Yield Conversion | Experiment
say of Reaction and make novelty ExperimentAt the outset, the objective of this experiment is to scrutinize the enume account of response and the event transformation. And the foremost principal that should be applied in order to determine both regularize of chemical reaction and turn over conversion is material balance for bunch reactions. As the experiment go on, students ar supposed to perceive the factors catering the yield, station of reaction and too the conversion. According to the hypothesis of the experiment, with the increment of ethyl acetate (reactant) from 0.1M to 0.2M the rate of reaction should gradually increase, leading to an augmentation of the rate of reaction as well as the conversion of atomic number 11 acetate from atomic number 11 hydrated oxide.Secondly, the theories that students must be acquainted with is, batch reaction, conversion, rate of reaction, conduction yield and saponification. Saponification is an essential theory that drive t he squ are experiment, as it function by hydrolyzing an ester, forming a savageic salt and alcohol. With the absence of the pertinent knowledge of saponification, the experiment provide not be successful.Thirdly, the modus operandi of the experiment, it comprises of 3 focal steps, preparation of reactant, experimental arrangement and procedure to be carried out during experiment. Students are to be particularly vigilant during the experiment, as reactant given, contain some doubtful substances that are detrimental to human body.Subsequently, with the use of 2 different concentration of acetyl acetate during the experiment, the end and calculation of yield and rate of reaction could be analyzed. The result tabularize base on the two different concentration should show a vast divergence. The 0.2M of ethyl acetate should possess a high(prenominal) yield and rate of reaction according to the hypothesis of the experiment. Before proceeding to the conclusion, students are supposed to go through some discussion on the experiment. The points to be discussed are namely preventative measure and the factors affecting the rate of reaction. As a final point, the conclusion, it concludes whether the hypothesis of the experiment corresponds with the actual experiment performed. Tentatively the conclusion should condescend the hypothesis of the experiment, which is, as the concentration of ethyl acetate increases, the rate of reaction and conversion also increases. (Singapore Polytechnic 2009) visible balance with chemical reaction1. universe1.1 BackgroundOver the years, heaps of researches pee been done to capitalize on the yield, conversion and increase the rate of reaction. These three factors are the point in which hand close connection with the profit of the company. By increasing the yield it means more convergenceion generate with a standard substance of reactant used. As for rate of reaction, rationally, the faster the rate of reaction the greater the pro duction rate within a certain period. During the experiment, batch process is employ as a speciality for chemical reaction between sodium hydroxide and ethyl acetate to take place. The reaction produces sodium acetate and ethanol every thirty minutes, record was taken every one minutes to note down the conductivity values. The whole process of obtaining the product from sodium hydroxide and ethyl acetate, consist of batch process, closed scheme, law of conversion and also saponification reaction.Batch process, is a process when a fixed charge of raw material is introduced and the products withdrawn before the motorcycle repeat. A closed system is a system where no material crosses the system boundary. As for The Law of Conservation of Energy it states that energy bay windownot be created or destroyed, but can change its form. Lastly For unsteady state process, it means, not all of the aims in the process remain constant with time or the flows in and out of the system can var y with time.1.2 AimThe aim of this experiment on material balance with chemical reaction is to allow students to employ the formula of material balance with chemical reaction for batch reaction by determining the yield, conversion and reaction rate. The purpose is to allow students to understand the change of reaction, when the backbreaking NaoH react with ethyl acetate in a nuclear reactor as time passes by. With the knowledge of it, we will then be able to understand the saponification reaction of NaoH with ethyl acetate dissolving agent.1.3 HypothesisThe hypothesis of the experiment is that during the Saponification reaction between NaOH and ethyl group acetate solution in the reactor, the concentration of NaOH would decrease due to the payoff of NaOH jettyecules being used for the reaction to produce sodium acetate. Furthermore, by increasing the concentration of ethyl acetate, the rate of reaction will also be change magnitude2. Theory2.1 Introduction of TheoryThe role o f the theory below is to give a more detailed explanations on saponification, batch process, conversion, yield, rate of reaction and conductivity, so that is can allow students to have a better perception on the experiment.2.2 Batch ProcessBatch process is a process in which a fixed charge of raw material is introduced and the product is withdrawn before the cycle repeat. During the experiment, batch process is employed, as reactants are put in to the system for thirty minutes for reaction to take place. After which products are withdrawn and the setup used are sluice before another batch of reactant are introduced again. Owing to the change in concentration and production of new product, the reaction is categories under unsteady state. (Singapore Polytechnic 2009)2.3 SaponificationSaponification is delineate as a process where ester is hydrolyzed, forming an acid salt and an alcohol. For this experiment, students are suppose to apply the knowledge they acqui expiration on saponif ication and react ethyl acetate and sodium hydroxide and to produce sodium acetate and ethanol as the product of the reaction. Sodium acetate is form due to the displacement reaction which occurred during the overall reaction. The hydrogen in ester is displaced by the sodium ion in the sodium hydroxide, thus forming an acid salt sodium acetate. The reaction is irreversible, hence once the product is formed, it cannot be re reacted to form the initial state of sodium hydroxide and ethyl acetate. However, reaction could be accelerated with the use of a strong acid (concentrated sulphuric acid) as the accelerator pedal of the reaction. (Richard Hamner, Green Mountain Soap participation 2006)2.4 ConversionConversion is a technique, when a feed is converted to products. The term conversion can also be defined mathematically as dishing conversion. Percentage conversion is derived by dividing counterspys of key reactant that react, with mole of feed introduced and multiply it with 100 %. A 100% conversion is not likely to occur in the lab, this is due to the restrain of mechanism, which deprived the ideal conversion to transpire. (Singapore Polytechnic 2009)2.5 YieldThere are copious definitions for yield. The three generally prevalent definitions are yield based on feed, yield based on the reactant consumed and lastly yield based on the theoretical consumption of the limiting reactant. These three definitions are commonly employed by chemical engineering industrial to guesstimate the yield of the products. Yield based on feed are exemplify to be amount of desired product obtained, dissever by amount of key reactant (limiting reactant fed). As for yield based on the reactant consumed, it is depict as amount of desired products obtained, divided by amount of the key reactant consumed. Lastly as for yield based on the theoretical consumption of the limiting reactant it is elucidate as amount of product obtained, divided by the theoretical amount of products that would be obtained based on the limiting reactant if limiting reactant react completely. The usage of the formula varies from the given information. (Singapore Polytechnic 2009)2.6 pasture of ReactionRate of reaction is the speed of the overall reaction it can be affected by temperature, conductivity, extort, concentration surface area, and also catalyst.2.6.1 TemperatureTemperature will radically affect the rate of reaction. The collision of particles is determined by the energy a particle possessed. With a higher(prenominal) temperature, it will cater the particles to have a higher energy, hence increase the effectiveness of collision, and eventually resulting to a faster rate of reaction (Redspot Publishing 2005).2.6.2 PressurePressure is defined as a condition of being compress. The increase of pressure will cater to a faster rate of reaction as the areas the particle have are smaller after compression. This therefore causes particle of be closely packet together which result t o a higher frequency of collision between gaseous molecules. However, the increase of pressure is only relevant for gaseous molecules, as liquid and solid cannot be compressed (Redspot Publishing 2005).2.6.3 ConcentrationIncreases of concentration mean that the presences of particles in a limited loudness have increased. While the volume/ space remained constant, the quantity of the particles increases, these instigate the frequency of collision to be higher, and also enhancing in the effectiveness of collision. This effect on particles collision will encourage a faster rate of reaction during the reaction (Redspot Publishing 2005).2.6.4 Surface Area to Volume RatioThe bigger the surface of the particles, the smaller the surface area for collision of particles, whereas, when the particles surfaces are reduced, the chances of particles colliding in to each other will be higher. This is due to the increases in surface area of particles with it size are being reduce. Rate of react ion will therefore increases as frequency of collision increased (Redspot Publishing 2005).2.6.5 Presence of CatalystCatalyst is defined as a substance that is capable of reducing the activation energy of particles without itself taking part in the reaction. Therefore with the presence of a catalyst, particles will have a higher energy than the activation energy. These will lead to a higher frequency of collision and also the much more effective collision. Rate of reaction will gradually increases with more collision taking place (Redspot Publishing 2005).2.7 ConductivityThe conductivity values of sodium hydroxide is tantamount to the conductivity values of the solution, as the conductivity values of other reactants such as ethyl acetate, sodium hydroxide and ethanol are inconsequential. With the conductivity values of the solution ascertained, the concentration of sodium hydroxide in the reacting mixture can then be determined. The rate on how fast concentration of sodium hydroxide is depleting can that be easily achieved, by tabulating a graph (Copyright 2009 Russell Mainstream Supply Ltd)3. Procedure3.1 Preparation of Starting ReactantBefore beginning with the experiment, students should go through and understand the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) of sodium hydroxide and ethyl acetate. The understanding of the data sheet is imperative as, without apposite understanding on the chemical used, perilous hazard capability occur. The procedure on handling and disposal of chemical must be habituated before the beginning of the experiment. Students are handling with highly acerbic concentrated reactant, therefore, disposable glove and chemical goggles should be putted on at all time during the experiment. 500mL of 0.01M of sodium hydroxide solution and 500mL of 0.01M ethyl acetate was the concentration needed to be prepared for this experiment.500mL of 0.01M sodium hydroxide are suppose to be prepared, to do so, measuring cylinder was used to measure the pos tulate volume of 0.01M NaOH and poured in to a 500mL volumetric flask. De change water is poured in to the 500mL mark on the volumetric flask for dilution purposes. To ensure a fine dilution, flask should be cut throughed with stopper and shake to ensure solution decently mixed.Preparation of 500mL of ethyl acetate solution was done by pouring 250mL of de ionized water into a 500mL volumetric flask, followed by measuring the stock solution using a micropipettor and dispenses it to the 500mL volumetric flask. Top up solution up to 500mL mark, and cover it with a stopper and shake the solution to ensure solution is well mixed.Experimental SetupConductivity meter1-litre reaction beakerMagnetic stirring whatchamacallumConductivity probeReacting mixtureRetort standProcedure During ExperimentAs the preparation of the sodium hydroxide solution is completed, solution is poured in to the reactor with the reaction conditions adjusted to predetermined level. The reaction conditions are di rectly related to the overall reactions hence the recording of the condition is essential. Examples of the condition are, temperature, stirring speed, concentration and volume of reactions. Before the stirring process inaugurate, ensure that the conductivity meter probe is positioned into the reacting mixture and a stopwatch is ready for timing purposes. Ethyl acetate is to be poured in to the reactor, and recording should start immediately. While the solution is being stirred in the reactors, conductivity values are recorded at a tied(p) interval of one minute for thirty minutes. After thirty minutes, reactor is stopped and a magnetic rod is used, to remove the magnetic stir kibosh in the reactor. The conductivity probe is then withdrawn and sluiced scrupulously with de ionized water. As for the product, it is being disposed into a plastic waste container. The experiment is to be repeated based on the experimental methodology discussed with lecturer. However, to ensure consistenc y of the experiment, all glassware is to be rinsed. Once all the experiment is accomplished, all the equipments should be properly cleaned and chemical used are to be disposed in to the plastic waste container. Finally waste will be send to W314 for proper treatment before discarding and glassware used should be placed back to original location.Result and Calculation4.2 close of the Yield of Sodium AcetateDetermination of the yield of sodium acetate is associated with the concentration of sodium hydroxide. In tandem with the given information on the concentration of sodium hydroxide, the molar ratio employed can be dexterously deciphered. From here, calculation to verify the yield can be facilely obtained by using the mole, which is calculated using the molar ratio of sodium hydroxide and ethyl acetate. Finally, utilize the formula of yield calculation and the determination of the yield of sodium acetate can be anatomized.4.3 Yield and Rate of Conversion of 0.01M Ethyl Acetate Solu tion for 15 Minutes.Concentration of sodium hydroxide at one minute intervalNaOH + CH3COOC2H5 C2H5OH + CH3COONaTheoretical Mole of NaOH = 0.01 X 0.5L = 0.005 molActual Mole of NaOH = 0.00156 X 0.5L = 0.00078molNumber of moles reacted = 0.005 0.00078 = 0.00422molConversion of NaOH= 0.00422/0.005 X 100%= 84.4%Theoretically, since 1 mole of NaOH react and form 1 mole of CH3COONa, actual mole of CH3COONa= 0.00078Yield of CH3COONa= 0.00078/0.005=0.1564.4 Yield and Rate of Conversion of 0.02M Ethyl Acetate Solution for 15 MinutesFigure 4.4.2. chart showing concentration of sodium hydroxide against time (0.02M of ethyl acetate used)NaOH + CH3COOC2H5 C2H5OH + CH3COONaSet 2Theoretical mole of NaOH = 0.02 X 0.5L = 0.01 molActual mole of NaOH = 0.0017 X 0.5L = 0.00085molNumber of moles reacted = 0.01 0.00085 = 0.00915molConversion of NaOH= 0.00915/0.01 X 100%= 91.5%Theoretically, since 1 mole of NaOH react and form 1 mole of CH3COONa, actual mole of CH3COONa= 0.00085Yield of CH3COONa= 0.0 0085/0.01=0.0854.5 Rate of Reaction of 0.01M of Ethyl AcetateGraph 4.5.1. As shown, the black line which contains 0.02M of ethyl acetate has a slower rate of reaction as compared to the one in red which is 0.01M of ethyl acetate. This repudiated the hypothesis of this experiment. The dialectics of this contradiction is, there might be source of contaminant on apparatus or solution used.5.2 Factors Affecting Conversion and YieldThe ideal rate of conversion and yield will never be actualize under school environment or even in industries. As, in school students are using eye sight as a gauge for the experiment which indubitably cause error due to parallax error, as for industries, scorn being able to afford high cost machines and computer, the cunctation between human and machines will cause an slight differ o n the rate of conversion and yield.5.3 Factors Affecting Conductivity ValuesAs mention on the theory section, the conductivity values of ethyl acetate are imperceptible therefore the conductivity rate of sodium hydroxide is employed instead.During the experiment, 2 different concentration of ethyl acetate was used. The first set of experiment, we used a concentration of 0.01M. It produces a constant decreasing rate at every one minute interval. This shows that while the moles of sodium hydroxide are depleting, conductivity value to decreases too.As for the scrap set of experiment, the same things occurred but at a same rate as the first set of the experiment. This contravene the theory, as suppositionally, the increases in concentration to 0.02M will cause the moles of sodium hydroxide to deplete at a faster rate, which result to a faster decreasing rate for conductivity. Again, the dialectics of this contradiction is, there might be source of contaminant on apparatus or solution u sed.5.4 Precaution in ExperimentAs we all know, ethyl acetate are very volatile, it release harmful gas when it is expose to the environments. Therefore, adding of ethyl acetate into the volume metric flask must be carried out in the locoweed hood to prevent students from inhaling gases produced from ethyl acetate, which is harmful to human body. In addition, safety goggles and rubber gloves should be worn at all times during the experiment. This help to prevent students from having direct contact with the acid which might cause skin irritation of temporary loss of vision.5.5 Comparison of Two Different TestsAs two different concentrations were employed during the experiments, the result on yield and conversion rate will be different.5.5.1 Comparison of the Yield of Two Different TestsUpon completion of experiments, the differences in yield were realised. The yield of 0.01M ethyl acetate was 0.156 and the yield of 0.02M ethyl acetate is 0.085. Theoretically, due to the increment in concentration, the yield of 0.02M of ethyl acetate should be higher as, since more reactants is used it will rightfully result in more products being formed. However, as mention above, there might be chances of the reactants or apparatus used being contaminated, which result in the huge differences between the yields.5.5.2 Comparison of the Conversion RateThe conversion rate of 0.01M of ethyl acetate was 84.4% and the conversion rate of 0.02M of ethyl acetate was 91.5%. The result shown was excellent, as high conversion rate will mean that, majority of the reactant was fully utilized, hence saving cost.6. ConclusionBased on experiment, I can construe that the higher the concentration of ethyl acetate, it will result to a much faster rate of reaction, and a higher rate of conversion. The conductivity value is interred related and proportioned to the concentration of sodium hydroxide. Therefore, since observation and hypothesis are similar, the hypothesis is true. The aim of the exper iment are also fulfilled, as scrutiny of the experiment have verify that, while the concentration of ethyl acetate got higher, the rate of reaction and rate of conversion increases. In addition, adding of catalyst or increasing surrounding temperature could also result in a faster rate of reaction which tantamount to an increment in rate of conversion.

Risk Assessment StrategyThe pursual section provides a structured and coherent approach to identify, assess and manage risk.Defining the Boundary for AssessmentDefining boundaries in the project helps in streamlining the risk assessment process. It is still that risks that occur beyond the scope of the project are not under the control of Project Manager. The risk assessment is being done fo r the newly acquired land parcel adjacent to the boundary of the exemplar phase (See Figure 2) and the register will examine electric potential risks, causes, risk mitigation actions and the stakeholders responsible.Figure 2 state of affairs Boundary in the Process of AcquisitionAssessment ApproachPotential risks have been identified based on the available literature on Bicester Eco-town and by brainstorming over various driving factors, likelihood of their occurrence and impact, evaluating and prioritizing risks for further action and then by developing a mitigation plan to tackle the risks without affecting the project. Figure 3 outlines the fundamental risk management process steps.Figure 3 Fundamental Risk Management whole steps (Garvey, 2008) whole tone 1. Risk IdentificationRisk identification is the critical first step of the risk management process. Its objective is the early and continuous identification of risks, including those within and external to the project.Step 2. Risk Impact and Consequence AssessmentIn this step, assessment is made of the impact each risk event could have on the project. This typically includes how the event could impact cost, schedule or any other technical performance. Additional criteria such as political or economic consequences would also require consideration.Step 3. Risk PrioritisationIn this step, overall set of identified risks, their impact and their probability of occurrence are processed to derive the most critical to least critical rank-order of all the risks. One of the main reasons for prioritizing risks is to form a basis for allocation critical resources.Step 4. Risk Mitigating PlanningThis step involves the development of mitigation plans to eliminate, reduce or manage risk. Once a plan is incorporated, it is monitored to assess its efficacy with an intention to revise its course-of-action if necessary. The other steps involved in developing in force(p) risk management strategy to establish a good appr oach to assessment and select the suitable risk management tool. In-order to do this the, various phases of the project are divided per RIBA Plan of works (RIBA,2013) and the stages are mentioned below.PlanningDesignConstructionHandover and Close OutRisk Identification and Classification RulesMethodical Approach to identify risks are as follows,Clear classification of aims and objectives of the project.Develop a very good criterion for risk assessment.Identify risks for both aims and objectives that are derived from risk assessment criteria.Use both Qualitative and Quantitative measures to assess risks and rank them per their severity of impact on the project.Group Meetings that involve all the stakeholders and brainstorming of potential risks.Generate minutes of meetings (MOM) to document discussions and the responsible parties for the identified risks.Classification of RisksThe identified risks are classified into various categories and are measured per the level of impact. The fa ctors contributing to the measure of impact are mentioned below,CostTimeReputationQualityImpact on StakeholdersEnvironmental Impact good ImpactHealth and Safety ConcernsLegal ImplicationsEach of the above-mentioned factors are ranked between 1-5, 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest in terms of impact and is detailed in Table 3.Table 3 Measure of Consequences of the identified RisksRating of Risk EventsThe scoring of risks was calculated in such a way that the highest possible risk rating for any of the categories was taken into cautious consideration. The score ranging between 1 and 125, were used to generated 4 coloured rating. Here red, yellow, amber and green colours are used. The colour is assigned to a risk depending on its severity. Red stands for immediate action risk, Amber for medium risk, yellow for minor attention requiring risk and green for low/ Acceptable risk. The table 4 below illustrates the scores of this coloured rating.Table 4 Risk Rating Matrix5. Risk Mitigation Plans by and by identifying the risks that are very likely to occur based on the risk rating matrix, some of the risks are prioritised and a mitigation plan is proposed in the following passages below.Risk 1 Rejection/ Delay of planning permissionManagement Action Planned Proposed development plans should comply with building regulations, standards and specifications. Because our product is pose a relatively high initial price as our target market is for elite customers.By using this strategy it can help to hand a high-quality image for our new product and provides the firm with pricing flexibility.Another point of view why our product is suitable for that strategy the reasons for that are our product is in the early stages of life cycle and our new product is distinctive.Product costWhen we setting up the price. Therefore, our products have better quality than any other competitors.Legally import from china.Well packing to avoid damage by transportations.Only sell qualified products there is no damage items. helplessnessSelling price may b a bit problem for ordinary class customers because of our products target market is for elite customers.Distribution direct from manufacturers to the retailer so we arent sure the retailers do their work perfect or not.Our company is newly established. As we are in introduction stage, the awareness of people about our brand may be smaller even though our product is nice.We need lots of promotional strategies than other existing competitors to penetrate the market.OpportunitiesWe allow some opportunities for our customers and also definitive agent too . If a customer buys goods for 200,000ks within a month we give him/her 5%discount card up to two years. For authorized agent if their revenues touch the focus target we allow them to get feedback 5% of their revenues as bonuses for them and also free trips to China.ThreatsOne biggest threat for our product is that there are lots of famous competitors.Delay transportation, for example, when we import out products from China by ship if the weather is terrible our stocks will be delay. We have to sell our products fit in to the weather if our stocks are delayed we cant sell these delay product on that time. If we are going to sell those products in coming season it is sure that our products are not up to date.Another one is inflation because of that the value of Myanmar Kyat became low so when exchanging money fluctuation is threat for us.Action PlanWe will provide our customers with the best quality products.By giving opportunities helps our firm to increase the volume of sales.Make our product well-know and satisfying consumer wants by developing goods and special service. We adjure our main competitor by making priority of consumer wants on the other hand their weakness is they only focus on making money by selling men wears whereas we make satisfy our consumers by selling both genders and also accessories for both of them and also discount systems. We will build trust with our consumers and let them know that our product is reliable and qualified in these ways we hope to build strengths and to overcome our weakness..

The Tempest as Shakespeares Resignation Speech -- Tempest essays
The Tempest as Shakespeares Resignation Speech In Shakespeares, The Tempest, the character Prospero is in many ways similar to Shakespeare himself at the time he wrote the play. Prospero, having entertained himself with his magic for most of his life, now gives up his powers as he seems to understand that his magic is no more and no less than life itself it is dear as transitory and hollow. This seems to reflect on Shakespeares attitude toward play writing. Having spent his life writing plays and being entertained by his own employment, Shakespeare finds that his plays, while they look for the themes of life and relationship, are finally no more meaningful than life itself seems to a man who must have been feeling his mortality. The Tempest is Shakespeares resignation speech. Having run aground that his magic has failed him, Shakespeare is retiring to the real world, for if nothing of meaning is to be gained in play writing, then all that is left is to be human. First, look at Prosperos final determination in the play. He is capable of returning to Milan and ruling it while keeping his magical power - he does not have to choose between the deuce - and he abandons his power. Just as Shakespeare was not forced to quit writing, Prospero is not forced to abandon his magic. In addition, Shakespeare specifically has Prospero tell us My charms crack not, my hard liquor obey, ... ( V.i 2 ). Shakespeare means to tell the audience he is not quitting because his ability as a writer is lessening at all, but specifically tells us through Prospero that he is at his peak and is completely in command of his art. There is no other obvious thematic or plot-development reason why Prospero should specifically ... ...total lack of morality, or Hotspurs view of absolute honor, had some doubt to it, or could be thought of differently. Prosperos argument here is irrefutable. Nothing he presents is in any way iffy or doubtable. This is Shakespeares final conclusion plays, like life, fade into nothing, and nothing is left worth doing but to be what we are human, and mortal. The Theme of Blindness in King Lear Essay examples -- English Literatu
The Theme of Blindness in King Lear In the tragedy King Lear, the term sightlessness has an entirely different meaning. It is not a corporeal flaw, but the inability of the characters to see a person for whom they truly are. They can only read what is presented to them on the surface. King Lear, Gloucester and Albany are three boot examples characters who suffered most by having this flaw. Lear was by far the blindest of the three. Because Lear was the King, one would expect him to have superb reasoning skills, but his lack of insight kept him from making unused choices. This is the flaw that led to his downfall. Lears first big mistake was letting himself be fooled by Regan and Goneril, and giving them his throne. For they did not love him at all, he could not consider the depth of Cordelias love for him. He banished her from the kingdom without one thought to what she had said. Lears last words to the only daughter that truly loved him were .....for we/ have no such(prenominal ) daughter, nor shall we ever see/ that face of hers again. Therefore be gone/ without our grace, our love, our benison. (Shakespeare 1, 1. 262-265) Lears blindness also caused him to banish Kent, one of his most loyal followers. Kent tried to stand up to Lear in Cordelias honor, but Lear would not listen to what Kent was trying to tell him. To Kents opposition This hideous rashness, answer my life, my judgement,/ Thy youngest daughter does not love thee least ( 1,1. 150-151) Lear responded with, Kent on thy life, no more. ( 1, 1, 154) Out of my sight ( 1, 1. 157) This is a good example of Lears lack of insight. He was being too stubborn to see that Kent was only trying to do what was beaver for Lear. After Kent had been banished, he ... ...for Goneril blinded him from the evilness that she possessed. He was blind from the fact that Goneril was having an affair with Edmund, and planning to have her husband killed. Fortunately Edgar, devised a plan to remedy Albanys blindness. A l etter outlining Gonerils plan, was all that Albany needed to see. After reading the letter Albany came to his senses and confronted Goneril O Goneril,/ You are not worth the dust which the vulgar wind/ Blows in your face ( 4, 2. 29-31) Unlike Lear and Gloucester, Albany did not suffer from his bout of blindness, he lived to become the leader of which was once Lears kingdom. In King Lear, blindness is a theme portrayed by the main characters of these plots. Throughout the play Shakespeare is saying that the world cannot be seen with eyes only. It is a combination of mind, emotion and heart. dead on target sight comes from within.
